A goal of Bill Collins since he was a candidate for Mayor was to encourage more of the talented and kind-hearted people of Summerville to volunteer their time and talents to worthy causes in the community, such as helping those in need and coming up with creative solutions to some of the additional challenges many people face, especially in in this difficult economy.
This message resonated with Larry Weatherford, a local businessman, who was a leader of volunteer efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in developing meaningful service projects throughout the Lowcountry for several years.
After the election, Mayor Collins and Larry Weatherford enlisted critically important support for the Summerville Cares Day of Service from the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce, Dorchester School District II, and three congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All agreed to join this effort as "Founding Partners" to help make the project a reality. They enlisted the support of other organizations as partners and sponsors in the remarkably successful Day of Service 2012, 2013, 2014. More than 1,054 volunteers from 46 organizations have completed projects that have improved the community and lifted the spirits of those who serve and those helped.
We wholeheartedly invite and welcome all church groups, civic organizations, public and private employee groups and individual citizens to join in the fun.
